Into the -ber months

I think I got too excited.

We are now just in the last half of the -ber months and I'm practically done with Christmas shopping (the other gifts are still a work in progress).. Truth to tell I'm done with the wrapping of these presents too.. and I saved a few pesos while I was at it!

Here are some tips to get your shopping done early and save a little money :)

  1. Keep your old gift list handy (upload it to google docs spreadsheet if you want).
  2. Starting saving as early as August for Christmas shopping money.
  3. Take advantage of the mid-year and the last quarter sale in the malls/ shops.
  4. Shop early in places like 168 and Divi mall (or where you can get great deals for piece/ bulk purchases) before an increase in prices and human traffic happen.
  5. To save on wrapping paper, I used old (3year old) magazines and craft paper as my wrapping paper of choice.

Now those gifts, I've done wrapping, are now residing in my closet til december :)

What are your tips to get Christmas shopping done early while saving a little money?

top 10 tools i cant live without

When we boot up our workstations, we automatically open a good number of applications to get us through the day and here's a list of the top 10 software/ applications that I can't live without and why: (warning, the list below mixes productivity with pleasure :o) hehe!)

  1. Portable Firefox - my favorite web browser! I currently use firefox with the Tab Mix plus and the PDF download extension.
  2. Google docs - Web based writer I use for my blog posts and other docs that I need to work on no matter where I find myself. I particularly find its integration with blogger very useful - which i wrote up in an earlier post, what it means to "collaborate" , making posting to blogger easier.
  3. Google reader - my RSS feed reader of choice. This is where I receive my technology news, my friends' blog updates, personal finance advice, etc. Its a simple but powerful feed reader with keyboard short cuts!
  4. Yahoo mail - currently my primary email. I haven't totally migrated to Gmail, but I don't see this happening anytime soon - reads yahoo mail has unlimited storage!
  5. BitComet - my torrent client of choice :) it has an easy and clean interface that makes it hard not to use.
  6. Blogger - my blogging platform of choice :) simple and effective (and has more free storage space than wordpress hehehe!)
  7. Portable The GIMP - this photoshop rival dwells in my thumb drive enabling me to do "photoshoping" on the fly
  8. My life Organized - a simple task list that can handle sub tasks. You can even place attach text on a specific task. Pretty cool!
  9. Picasa - Photo organization at its best, plus a quick solution for quick fixes. I like using picasa for its crop tool because you can easily resize photo's for printing in 4R. I also found its duplicate finder a super useful and space saving tool! Scouring through the web I found that picnik is a good web based alternative for those who like picasa just for a quick fix.
  10. MS office - for office related work, although I might try to migrate to open office if and when i get the chance.

I got this blog post idea from cogniview.com's article on top 10 tools I can't live without

What are the applications that you can't live without? Lets hear it in the comments!

Weight loss plan: Setting my goals

To get on-track with my weight loss plan, first I have to set realistic goals that i can monitor my progress against, in terms of weight loss and exercise.

Weight loss goal:
  • to lose 60lbs by the end of April - thats roughly 8.5lbs per month or 2.1lbs per week!! I plan on keeping the weight loss per week down so wont have to stress my body too much =)
Exercise goals for October:
  1. do aerobics every monday and friday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
  2. play ultimate frisbee every tuesday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
These exercise goals do not pertain to any specific or measurable exercise program for me to shoot for, but these are the goals i hope to accomplish that will help me get me off my chair. Lucky for me, my office has these( after-work offerings of fitness classes starting this week that i can take advantage of to kick start my weight loss plan!! =)

I'll share my (more specific and measurable) goals for next few months in another post!

Here are some tips in exercise goal-setting that i got from this article - 4 simple steps to start the exercise habit (@ zen habits) that i hope will help you make your own exercise/ weight loss goals!!

Goals should be written, specific, measurable, and time bound.
  • Written - to serve as a reminder of your targets, because if its "out-of-sight" it will become "out-of-mind"
  • Specific - your goal should identify what type of exercise you will be engaging in, when you will be doing the exercise and where. an example would be: Road-run 1km every 7.30am every Tuesday at the village park.
  • Measurable - you should be able to put up your current progress against your goal, then maybe you may adjust your goals accordingly. an example would be: Road-run 1km every 7.30am every Tuesday at the village park done under 10mins.
  • Time bound - keeping exercise goals within a time frame ensures progression of your goals as well as your fitness levels. an example would be: Road-run 1km every 7.30am every Tuesday at the village park done under 10mins for the month of October. for Sept it should be done under 8mins.. so on and so forth..

Do you already have exercise goals in mind? Care to share in the comments?

My weight loss plan

I've been overweight since i was a kid, currently my weight catergory has placed me in the medical condition named obese 2! (there's overweight, obese 1 then obese 2!!)

I've experienced being the butt of every joke on the table, being denied insurance coverage because I am a potential health risk (huwaattt!!) and being stared at in disbelief because my physical appearance belies the weighing scale's truth.

I am not an expert in this area, heck my bout with the weighing scale belittles my credibily here, but here are my thoughts on how to shed off the extra pounds so spare me a few minutes and hear me out. I hope you'll be able to pick up some tips to help you lose weight too!!

Keep yourself active.
The fastest way to lose weight is to walk it off!
Jogging, walking, biking or running at least 30mins 3x a week is the best way to burn fat!!

You can get useful tips to start running here - beginners guide to running

There are a myriad of choices of physical activity to make sure you won't get bored working out - with this said, I suggest to change your type of workout every month or 2 (WARNING: your substitute physical activity should be of the same intensity or you'll just lollipop back to your old weight) A few months back, i jogged for 1 month, then core training for 1 month, then i enrolled in hiphop class for a month and then i stopped...so now i'm trying to hop back into my weight loss plan! haha!! but seriously, i was able to lose around 30lbs!! =D

I don't believe in dieting, I believe in changing your eating habits.
Eat what you want, just eat in moderation, just eat in the end in mind (food is for sustenance! there's more to life than just sitting on a table to munch on grub), and just eat slow (us humans have brains that take it 20mins for it to register that we are full).

As I lost weight before, I noticed that my eating preferences changed too, I started choosing my meat options. If there is fish I would eat fish instead. I would search the pork adobo platter for pieces with less fat. I would scrape off the fat in the lechon (roast pork) skin before munching on it (sacrilege!! hehe!!) The bottom line is that if you want to keep the weight off, you must make the conscious effort to do so (after which it just becomes part of your eating lifestyle and thus second nature).

Thus this article marks the start of putting my plan into action! Stay tuned!!

Do you have any weight loss tips you can share with me? Lets hear it in the comments!

Here's the article that inspired me to write this post - a simple 5 step weight loss plan

Waking up early

Its 5.30am. I just woke up. Its still dark out and I am the only one awake.
I shut of my phone's alarm. I check my phone for any messages. I play computer, watch a dvd or do my homework (when i was back in college) I clean my car. I prepare for work. I leave for work.

I enjoy the morning's quiet time. I don't have to try to kick out my brother from the computer so i can use it. I don't have to watch through my nephew's Dora, Blues Clues, and other kids' dvds. I have the house all to myself in the morning!!

I also get to avoid traffic when I wake up early. I avoid the traffic to use the only bathroom with a heater in the house, and i get to spend as much time in the bathroom as I want! haha!! By leaving for work early, I also get to avoid traffic on the road. No more rushing to work and getting stressed out by the traffic.

To get up early, I usually use my cellphone's alarm. But to make sure I get up, I take a full glass of water before I sleep so I really have to wake up to go relieve myself. Hahaha!!

Here's a short list of Pros and Cons (IMO) of waking up early

Pros
  1. Quiet time
  2. Enjoy household facilities without competition
  3. Avoid the stress of competition (i.e. traffic, lining up to use the bathroom, etc)
  4. You make sure your time is well spent (you dont waste time in traffic, lining up to load gas, finding a parking slot, etc.)

Cons
  1. The joys are short lived, unless you don't wake up early enough
  2. You have to make sure you sleep early in the evening
  3. If you need someone to answer a question or to help you with something, they are all still asleep
  4. You have to cook your own breakfast

Here's the amazing article from zenhabits that inspired me to write this post

More ways then one to use your camera-phone

In this day and age that cellphones are equipped with a camera as a standard, we find more ways to use the camera-phone. Aside from the obvious call and text utility of the camera-phone, I use the phone's camera to take pictures of my dog (before he died), my nephew, my girlfriend and myself! haha!
Well, thats until I came across this article from lifehacker.com a few days ago that outlines how to use the camera to increase your memory.

My fav bit that i picked up from this article is to use your camera phone to remember where you parked in the mall and to use your camera phone to take a picture of an item you want on your wishlist! I have found myself on several occasions on the wrong floor of the parking lot in the mall, so now i take a picture of the area/ floor number of where i parked. Also when i go to the mall without cash on me, just to window shop, i find interesting stuff I want to buy the next time i drop by the mall so i take a picture of these items and label them with the price and the name of the store.

This article from itmanagement.earthweb.com details other uses of the camera-phone aside from extending your memory.

What do you use your camera-phone for?

Green ATS Bulalohan - Tagaytay FoodTrip #4

Day 3 time to go home and time to go shopping for pasalubong (gifts to bring home) so after checking out we headed over to Amira's Buco Tart Haus to buy some tarts and then have lunch at Green ATS before getting to Bag of Beans to buy some bread and choco rolls (yummy!!) to bring home!

My Grandfather wanted to have Bulalo for our last lunch for our Tagaytay vacation and so I suggested we try Green ATS, which isn't far from the place we stayed, it had a view of the Taal lake and it served bulalo :)

From our past experiences, we always ordered too much food and poor me i had to gobble it all up! So we decided to order 2 main dishes and rice good for all of us. We ended up with an order of Special Bulalo, an order of Buffalo wings (just because it caught my grandfather's fancy), and an order of garlic rice to share.

The Special Bulalo was ok but the soup in it was perfect! The meat in the Bulalo was marbled, so it was actually a little tough for my grandmother to chew. The veggies and the soup were the Bulalo's saviors otherwise it would have left us wanting for something else. The Buffalo wings were NOT Buffalo wings.. they were just deep fried chicken wings with batter served with thousand island dressing as a dip. But in defense to these so-called buffalo wings, they were pretty good! - i actually enjoyed these better than the Bulalo meat! The garlic rice was something like the garlic rice you always want for breakfast. Green ATS bulalohan were generous in the amount of garlic they put into the rice, making the rice really garlic-y-yummy!!

Green ATS bulalohan is located right after Bag of Beans (coming from Sta Rosa)

Manos Greek Taverna - Tagaytay FoodTrip #3

Day 2 in Tagaytay. After a hearty breakfast of poached egg, pandesal and assorted cold cuts, we left Sunrise Holiday Mansions to go visit the chapel at Pink Sisters and the chapel at Angel's Camp. For lunch we decided to go to the Greek Restaurant near the Tagaytay rotunda going towards the road to Sta. Rosa.

Mano's Greek Taverna is not hard to miss with its light blue and white sign. As you enter the resto greek music and greek pictures/ art greet you. Tables and chairs are simple fare but that will not get in the way to getting to eat good food!! We ordered Pasta Tomato soup and Saganaki (Shrimp, feta cheese and bread cubes in tomato sauce) as appetizers. My grandfather ordered the Grilled porkchops, my grandmother ordered the Cabbage rolls and I ordered the Mousaka (180php). The Pasta Tomato soup was really good, they used superb fresh tomatoes to really drive the taste of the soup! The Saganaki was ok - I had allergies that day so i wasn't really able to enjoy it because as I took as spoonful I was fretting over a possible allergic reaction! truly woe is me! :( The Grilled porkchops were grilled to perfection! It was really good - that it did not need any sauce to add to the flavor!! I'll say that the Cabbage rolls are for an acquired taste. It has rice and ground beef inside the cabbage exterior and is served covered in lemon-tasting-like sauce. The Cabbage rolls were ok, but if you are like my grandmother that enjoyed the sour flavoring added by lemon-like sauce then it would be delicious for you! haha!! I was initially disappointed with the Mousaka when it was being served - no side dish? no rice? or at least veggies? But the taste made all the difference!! It was not as rich as the Mousaka at Cafe Med, but it was still flavorful that made you want to finish it!

For healthy Greek food in a cool Al fresco setting, head over to Mano's Greek Taverna!

The Greek Taverna is located right before you reach the Tagaytay rotunda coming from Sta. Rosa.

Piccolo Mondo - Tagaytay FoodTrip #2

After checking in at Sunrise Holiday Mansion my Grandparents and I decided to have late lunch at Piccolo Mondo, an Italian Restaurant away from the conglomeration of restos along the ridge of Taal.
We were served with an appetizer of pita bread with olive- oil- balsamic- vinegar- with- parmesan- cheese dip on
the house. My Grandfather ordered the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara (150php), my grandmother ordered the Lamb Chop with mint sauce (295php) and I ordered the Herb Roast Chicken with Pasta Alla Olio as the side dish (295php) - thinking that the dishes were only good for 1 person, but we were mistaken and I ended up 2 pounds heavier today! Haha!!

The Spaghetti Alla Carbonara was delicious!! We loved it!! It was really tasty and creamy and the bacon's saltiness fit right in!! The lamb chop left me wanting.. It was tasty but the meat was kinda tough - too tough in fact for my grandmother, after a few bites she decided to eat the Pasta Ala Olio instead.. but i must say the mint sauce (pesto) was really good! The Herb roast chicken was kinda dry, but the gravy that came with the lamb chop was the perfect solution around the chicken's dryness. The Pasta Ala Olio that came with the chicken was good, but my grandmother ended up eating it, so I didn't really get to enjoy it - but that was ok, I helped my grandfather finish the Carbonara anyway :)

Bottomline is that the food in Piccolo Mondo is good for 2 and that its a good place to eat pasta - if their super delicious Spaghetti Alla Carbonara is any indication of yumminess of their other pasta dishes!

Piccolo Mondo is located beside David's Salon in front of Shell Gas Station, which is right after Mushroom Burger (coming from Sta Rosa)

Amira's Buco Tart Haus - Tagaytay FoodTrip #1

On the road going to Sunrise Holiday Mansions, my grandparents and I decided to cruise along the highway to spot a resto where we could eat lunch after checking in the hotel. Along the way we spotted Amira's Buco Tart Haus' pink banners and were instantly curious on what this place had to offer - my grandfather being a Buko-lover, so we decided to give the place a visit after lunch. After lunch in Piccolo Mondo (for another post hehe!), we trooped over to Amira's Buco Tart Haus to check it out.

Amira's Buco Tart Haus sold, well, Buco Tarts as well as Mango, Pineapple, Ube, and Apple tarts in boxes of 9pcs for 130php. They also sold egg, blueberry and mango tarts in boxes of 6pcs for 130php. Amira's also had other delicacies for sale, under consignment.

My grandfather decided to buy a box of assorted tarts, a box of egg tarts and a box of blueberry tarts to try before we decide to buy for pasalubong. From the box of assorted tarts I tried the Ube, apple and pineapple tarts - (my grandfather beat me to the Buco tarts!). The apple and pineapple tarts reminded me of smaller versions of apple pie and pineapple pie, respectively, but were surprisingly good versions of these pies; the Ube tart was ok. The blueberry tarts tasted really good and again reminded me of smaller versions of the blueberry cheese cakes. The Egg tart was a pleasant surprise, it was delicious; it reminded me of leche flan in tart crust, yummy!!

Unfortunately for those I wished to bring home pasalubong, Amira's Buco Tart Haus has already a growing fan base that ensures that some of their tarts get sold out around lunch time - even on a week day!! So I was only able to purchase one box of assorted tarts, one box of egg tarts and one box of mango tarts (I had to settle for mango since the blue berry tarts were sold out already!) - the mango tarts were also really good!

I recommend Amira's tarts as one of the must-bring-home-some items, aside from the bread from Bag of Beans, from Tagaytay city.

Amira's Buco Tart haus is located between Bag of Beans and Royal Tagaytay Estates.

What it means to "go through the motions"

"Go clean your room!"

Overwhelmed by the amount of mess in my room, i end up procrastinating about fixing my room and let myself succumb to laziness.. Then i came across this article from unclutterer, on establishing routines. The bottomline of the article, as i understood it, is that i could assign different chores/ areas of my house/ room to a particular day or week so i won't feel overwhelmed by the amount of work i need to put in just to do my chores/ clean my house/ room (I hope i did the article justice!).

Based on the above principle, i have assigned a particular day and time for the tasks i need to accomplish to be able to see, smell and call my room clean.

Here is what i came up with, Sunday - Closet (from sorting the clothes, cleaning the shelves, etc) Wednesday - Shelves - where i have my books, magazines, my landing strip (for another post!) and my shoes below (from dusting my books, sorting junk out of my landing strip, cleaning my shoes, etc.) and, Saturday - Bed and window area (from changing bed linens and curtains, sweeping under the bed, etc.)

Going through these motions ensures that by the end of each week my room is clean and clutter free!

Try mixing and matching the basic idea or principle of the article from unclutterer.com with your own lifestyle and clutter needs! Goodluck!!

What it means to "lose something"

Thats not important like my hair... to show to someone who means a lot to me that she is important.

For the longest time my "long" hair was an issue in the different circles in my life; with my mom, with my other relatives, with my friends, and of course with my girlfriend.

Frankly i'd rather lose my "long" hair than lose her :)

What it means to "collaborate"

I've been surfing the net for interesting stuff when i have down time at work and i can say that i have come across some really interesting stuff, and i have poked my head into the empire named google.

Hearing that google has been making alot of acquisitions like YouTube and Writely to name a few, i decided to check out what google has added to its plethora of services. After seeing the long list of services that "wowed" me, i decided to check out and tour a few of them. I'm pretty impressed with the work they have done to cover their bases in the new world of Web2.0.

I'm currently using their RSS feed reader, Gmail, Docs & Spreadsheets, Blogger, and their Blogsearch engine from time to time. Frankly i'm happy the way i can combine the uses of these applications. Here are some of the collaborations of the applications i have been using:

1. RSS feed reader with the Blogsearch engine - I use the feed reader to watch for new postings that Blogsearch will find. I just used blogsearch to find the specific topic i want and then i subscribed to the search feed. So every time a blog posts an entry matching the specific topic i entered in blogsearch im notified of its existence through the feed reader. Pretty niffty tool so you dont have to go to blogsearch everytime to check for any new entries.

2. Docs & Spreadsheets with Blogger - Im currently Docs & Spreadsheets to type up my posts for my blog and publish them to my blog in the docs & spreadsheet's publish menu. I believe the interface of docs & spreadsheets is a lot easier to use and navigate in than the post editor provided by blogger. As one example, it is easier to insert images to your posts through docs & spreadsheets than through the post editor in blogger.

3. Blogger with Multiply - Cross-posting is the best! Utilizing the blogging power of blogger and the marketing reach of multiply, ensures you that your thoughts are read.

I'm sure there are alot more application collaborations between and among google products and other applications (whether web based or not) that i have still to discover and find a use for.

I believe that the best part of this application collaboration is that its FREE!! the applications are FREE and so the collaboration!

What other application collaboration have you guys been using?

What it means to "lose tradition"

Did you know that May 28 was National Flag day for the Philippines?
Did you know that we are highly encouraged to display our Nation's Flag from May 28 to June 12, Independence day?

Well I didn't... All i know is that we should display our flag during independence day...

Its saddening that we don't know much of these traditions/ practices that pertain to showcasing our identity as Filipinos.

Well i guess its not too late to get myself a small version of our flag and display it outside my window.

What it means to be "portable"

In the age of smart cellphones, pda's, notebooks and laptops, technology provides us a new solution for mobility for work: Portable Applications. As defined in wikipedia, "a portable application, or portable app for short, is a software program that does not require any kind of formal installation onto a computer's permanent storage device to be executed, and can be stored on a removable storage device..."*
Install these apps in a USB stick and you're good to go! Think about having your own software utilities in the stick in your hand!! Your USB flash disk (or any portable flash or hard disk memory) can carry more than just your files, it can carry your software to run your files too!!
To date a lot of developments have already been made in this frontier. There are a lot of FREE portable apps available in cyberspace. These software range from the simple utilities, like getting information about IP addresses, to complex utilities for office document processing, for multimedia rendering and etc.

Some of the more popular portable app utilities downloaded nowadays are:
  • Anti-Virus applications like ClamWin and Avast
  • Password managers - KeePass Password safe and RoboForm2Go
  • Multimedia tools like GIMP and Audacity
  • Browsers like FirefoxPortable and Green Browser
Some of the portable app utilities that i think are cool (and not in the list above):
  • Web development tools - KampoZer
  • Bit torrent Client - uTorrent
  • Media Players - VLC portable
  • Personal Finance - Money Manger Ex
Currently i'm using the following portable apps:
  • ClamWin anti virus - you never know if the computer you're going to use has a virus, so i come well prepared. Also acts as utility i can use to check my friend's computer systems.
  • GIMP - picture editor
  • FirefoxPortable - so i wont lose my bookmarks!!
  • ProxyGet - useful tool to get the proxy settings of the computer your using so you can configure your FirefoxPortable
Check out the links below to get your own portable apps!!

Portable apps are not exactly for the mobile warrior (since you need a computer with a USB port) but it is a great solution for working mobility :)

As the list of portable applications grows longer, the possibilities for working mobility are bordering the InXane!!!
