What it means to be "portable"

In the age of smart cellphones, pda's, notebooks and laptops, technology provides us a new solution for mobility for work: Portable Applications. As defined in wikipedia, "a portable application, or portable app for short, is a software program that does not require any kind of formal installation onto a computer's permanent storage device to be executed, and can be stored on a removable storage device..."*
Install these apps in a USB stick and you're good to go! Think about having your own software utilities in the stick in your hand!! Your USB flash disk (or any portable flash or hard disk memory) can carry more than just your files, it can carry your software to run your files too!!
To date a lot of developments have already been made in this frontier. There are a lot of FREE portable apps available in cyberspace. These software range from the simple utilities, like getting information about IP addresses, to complex utilities for office document processing, for multimedia rendering and etc.

Some of the more popular portable app utilities downloaded nowadays are:
  • Anti-Virus applications like ClamWin and Avast
  • Password managers - KeePass Password safe and RoboForm2Go
  • Multimedia tools like GIMP and Audacity
  • Browsers like FirefoxPortable and Green Browser
Some of the portable app utilities that i think are cool (and not in the list above):
  • Web development tools - KampoZer
  • Bit torrent Client - uTorrent
  • Media Players - VLC portable
  • Personal Finance - Money Manger Ex
Currently i'm using the following portable apps:
  • ClamWin anti virus - you never know if the computer you're going to use has a virus, so i come well prepared. Also acts as utility i can use to check my friend's computer systems.
  • GIMP - picture editor
  • FirefoxPortable - so i wont lose my bookmarks!!
  • ProxyGet - useful tool to get the proxy settings of the computer your using so you can configure your FirefoxPortable
Check out the links below to get your own portable apps!!

Portable apps are not exactly for the mobile warrior (since you need a computer with a USB port) but it is a great solution for working mobility :)

As the list of portable applications grows longer, the possibilities for working mobility are bordering the InXane!!!
